Suryakumar Yadav led India to a second straight T20 World Cup title earlier this year, yet questions are now being asked about his batting consistency and his place as captain ahead of white-ball assignments against Ireland and England.
Selection meeting ahead
The Hindu reports that the selection committee will meet in Guwahati on 19 May to pick the Test squad for the one-off match against Afghanistan. Informal talks about the direction of the T20I side are also expected.
The BCCI had reportedly intended to stay with the World Cup-winning core for the coming tours, but Suryakumar’s recent struggles are said to have sped up discussion of a possible transition.
The numbers
At the 2026 T20 World Cup he scored 242 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 136.72, with a single fifty, against the United States. His IPL form for Mumbai Indians has not improved much. The 35-year-old has 195 runs from 11 games at an average under 18 and a strike rate of 144.44.
Looking to 2028
Suryakumar turns 36 in the coming months, and doubts are being raised over his role in plans for the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Selectors lack an obvious successor, though Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer are reportedly among the names under discussion. The forthcoming meetings could be important for the future shape of India’s T20I team.
