Player SpotlightRohit Sharma Hails Shubman Gill’s Fastest ODI Double Century in Guwahati
Gill’s 117-ball double hundred set an ODI record as India chased 405; Rohit Sharma praised his concentration after a long day in the heat.
A profile of Shubman Gill, the Punjab-born India opener: his rise from the Under-19 World Cup, batting style, IPL and ODI highlights, and playing legacy.
Shubman Gill is an Indian right-handed batter who has become one of the most polished top-order players of his generation. Born in 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab, he was marked out early as a rare talent, and his timing and balance have made him a fixture in India’s batting plans across formats.
Gill grew up in Punjab and came through the state’s age-group system before breaking into the Punjab senior side. His breakthrough on the global stage arrived at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, where India lifted the trophy and he was named player of the tournament. That performance carried him straight into the Indian Premier League with Kolkata Knight Riders.
Gill is known for compact technique, soft hands and a calm approach at the top of the order. He is strong through the off side and plays the cover drive and the straight drive with little apparent effort. His game is built on playing late and picking the gaps rather than relying on brute power, although he can accelerate when the situation demands.
He made his one-day international debut for India in January 2019, against New Zealand, and his Test debut came in Melbourne in December 2020 during the tour of Australia. A few weeks later he played a vital part in India’s famous series-clinching win at the Gabba, scoring 91 in the final-day chase.
In January 2023 he scored 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad, a one-day double century that made him the youngest man to reach that mark in the format. Later that year he finished the IPL season with 890 runs for Gujarat Titans, the highest total of the tournament and enough to win the Orange Cap.
Gill’s career is still being written, but the foundations are clear: a young batter who combined early success in age-group cricket with consistent output at the highest level. He is often discussed as part of the generation that followed the leading Indian batters of the 2010s, and his progress is closely watched by supporters. All career details here are as of the end of 2024; later developments are not covered.
