Profile of Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL franchise from West Bengal: founding, Eden Gardens, Bollywood ownership, titles won and the club’s sister teams.
Kolkata Knight Riders, abbreviated as KKR, are one of the founding franchises of the Indian Premier League. Based in Kolkata, the largest city of eastern India, the team wears purple and gold and has a high public profile thanks to its ownership and the loyal following that fills one of the most famous stadiums in world cricket.
The franchise was created in 2008 as part of the first IPL auction of city teams. It is owned by a group led by the film actor Shah Rukh Khan’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment, together with the actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta. This celebrity connection gave the team an unusually strong media profile from the start. The same group later invested in teams in other franchise leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League and Major League Cricket, using the Knight Riders name.
KKR play at Eden Gardens, one of the oldest and most iconic cricket venues in the world. The stadium has hosted international matches since the nineteenth century and a World Cup final in 1987. Its capacity was once far above 90,000, and although renovations have reduced it, it remains among the largest grounds in the country. The stadium is famed for its noisy crowds, and for the Kolkata pitch’s combination of pace and turn that has often rewarded spin as matches progress.
As of the end of the 2024 season, Kolkata Knight Riders have won the IPL three times: in 2012, 2014 and 2024. The first two titles were won under Gautam Gambhir, who led the team in the early part of the 2010s. In 2024 the franchise won its third title by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final in Chennai. They also won the Caribbean Premier League through their sister franchise, Trinbago Knight Riders, on several occasions, which has allowed the owners to speak about a group-wide brand.
The opening seasons were difficult, with the team finishing near the bottom of the table in its first three years. Results improved from 2011 onward, when the team reached the playoffs, and a title followed in 2012. The ability to build quality squads from auctions, with an emphasis on spin bowling and all-round players, became a defining feature of the club’s approach.
KKR are one of the most commercially valuable franchises in the IPL, and matches at Eden Gardens are regularly among the best-attended of any season. The club’s purple identity, the Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo slogan in Bengali and its close association with the city make it one of the most recognisable teams in the league.
