Caribbean Premier League (CPL): Format, History and Key Facts
Guide to the Caribbean Premier League: its 2013 launch, franchises named after Caribbean territories, the T20 format, venues and how the league has grown.
The Caribbean Premier League, known as the CPL, is the professional Twenty20 tournament of the West Indies. It brings together franchise teams from different Caribbean islands and mainland Guyana, and has become a major event in the regional sporting calendar, noted for a festival atmosphere with music and big crowds.
Launch and early years
The first CPL season was held in 2013. The tournament is run by Caribbean Premier League Ltd. together with Cricket West Indies and is staged across several islands. Jamaica Tallawahs were the first champions in 2013, and they won again in 2016. The competition quickly attracted overseas players, including international stars from other countries.
Franchises
The franchises are named after Caribbean territories and cities. Teams over the years have included Barbados Royals, previously called Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, Saint Lucia Kings, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Trinbago Knight Riders. The Trinbago Knight Riders, the Trinidad and Tobago side, are owned by the group behind Kolkata Knight Riders and have won the competition several times.
Format
The CPL is played in the Twenty20 format. Teams play against each other in a league stage and the top sides advance to the playoff stage. Matches are staged in Caribbean venues, including Kensington Oval in Barbados, Providence Stadium in Guyana, Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, Warner Park in St Kitts and Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia. The tournament is usually staged from late summer into early autumn, which places it at a different time from most other major franchise leagues.
Role in Caribbean cricket
The CPL has given West Indian players the chance to appear in front of home crowds in a high-profile competition, and it has acted as a launching point for young talent. Many of the stars of the West Indies T20 World Cup victories in 2012 and 2016 also appeared in the league. The tournament also exposes players from other countries to Caribbean conditions.
Women’s cricket
A Women’s Caribbean Premier League was introduced in 2022, initially as a smaller tournament played alongside the men’s event, which has widened the opportunities for female players in the region.
Why it matters
Because the West Indies team is made up of players from many territories, the CPL gives each island a team to support and a regular home for the game, which helps cricket remain connected to local communities.
