Barbados Royals: CPL Franchise Profile and History
Profile of Barbados Royals, formerly Barbados Tridents, in the Caribbean Premier League: history, Kensington Oval home and titles won up to the end of 2024.
Barbados Royals are the Barbados franchise in the Caribbean Premier League. The team was originally named Barbados Tridents and was renamed Barbados Royals in 2022 after the owners of the Rajasthan Royals took control of the franchise.
Origins
The team was a founding member of the CPL in 2013 and played as Barbados Tridents. They became champions in 2014 and again in 2019, giving the franchise two titles as of the end of 2024. Both victories came under the Tridents name.
The Royals era
The rebrand to Barbados Royals in 2022 brought the team into the same ownership group as Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, which also has interests in other leagues, including Paarl Royals in South Africa’s SA20. The Royals reached the CPL final in their first season under the new name but lost to Jamaica Tallawahs. Later seasons are not covered here.
Home ground
The team plays at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, one of the most storied grounds in world cricket. It staged the final of the 2007 ODI World Cup and the 2010 T20 World Cup final, and has been home to countless Test matches. The ground is known for its passionate crowd and, in T20 cricket, for a surface that is generally good for batting.
Significance
Barbados has a remarkable cricket heritage, producing figures such as Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Gordon Greenidge. The franchise carries that heritage into the modern T20 era. Squads are rebuilt every season, so no current players are listed here.
