Canada Cricket Team: 1844 Origins, World Cups and T20 Wins

A guide to the Canada men’s cricket team, covering its 1844 match with the US, World Cup appearances, 2003 highlights and the 2024 T20 World Cup debut.

Canada has a rich cricketing past that stretches back to the middle of the nineteenth century, even though the sport now sits alongside several others in the country’s sporting landscape. Its national side is one of the longest-established Associate teams.

The 1844 match

In 1844 Canada played the United States at the St George’s Cricket Club in New York. This game is widely regarded as the first international cricket match between two countries, and the rivalry has continued on and off ever since.

Governance and base

The team is run by Cricket Canada and is an ICC Associate Member. Much of the country’s cricket is centred on the Toronto area in Ontario, where large communities of South Asian and Caribbean heritage have kept the game active. Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City, Ontario, and grounds around Toronto and Brampton have hosted national fixtures.

World Cup history

Canada played in the men’s 50-over World Cup in 1979, 2003, 2007 and 2011. In 2003 the side beat Bangladesh, and John Davison struck a century off 67 balls against the West Indies, then the fastest in World Cup history.

After a long wait, Canada made its T20 World Cup debut in 2024. In their match against Ireland in New York, they won by 12 runs, giving the side its first victory in the tournament.

Franchise cricket

Canada has also hosted a franchise T20 competition, the Global T20 Canada, which began in 2018 and brought overseas stars to venues in the country. The league helped raise the profile of the game, though the national side’s fortunes have depended mainly on its own player development.

Outlook

The challenge for Canada is to turn a large cricket-loving population into a consistent pipeline of elite players, and to find regular matches against stronger opponents. The growing attention on North American cricket, including the 2024 T20 World Cup and the sport’s Olympic return, may support that aim. This is a general overview and does not cover current squads, rankings or recent results.
