Guide to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup: first held in 2007, how it works, the 20-team format used in 2024 and every champion through that edition.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the global championship of Twenty20 international cricket. Organised by the International Cricket Council, it brings national teams together in a short, high-intensity tournament and has grown from a twelve-team event to a twenty-team competition.
The first tournament was staged in South Africa in 2007, only a few years after the Twenty20 format had begun at domestic level. India won it by beating Pakistan in the final in Johannesburg, by five runs. The success of the event helped to spread the format quickly, and it led directly to the creation of franchise tournaments such as the Indian Premier League.

The tournament began with twelve teams, and it was later expanded to sixteen and then to twenty for the 2024 edition. The twenty teams were divided into four groups of five, with the top two from each group moving to a Super Eight stage, followed by semi-finals and a final. Matches are played over twenty overs per side, and the tournament has been held every two years in most cycles, with some changes caused by the pandemic.
The 2016 final in Kolkata was won by West Indies after Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes in the last over against England. In 2022, England beat Pakistan in the final in Melbourne. In 2024, India beat South Africa in the final in Barbados, winning by seven runs, to claim their second T20 World Cup. The 2024 event also saw the United States, as a co-host, qualify for the Super Eight stage after a victory over Pakistan.
The T20 World Cup has given associate nations a global stage, with teams such as Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland, Nepal and the Netherlands recording notable results. The 2024 event was the first to be played in the United States, as part of the ICC’s plan to broaden the sport’s reach in new markets.
