Melbourne Cricket Ground: History, Pitch and Memorable Matches

A guide to the MCG in Melbourne, covering its role in the first Test in 1877, the Boxing Day Test, World Cup finals and its huge capacity.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground, universally known as the MCG, is one of the largest and most historic cricket stadiums in the world. Located in Yarra Park, close to Melbourne’s city centre, it has a capacity of around 100,000 and is also the home of Australian Rules football.

History

The ground was established in the 1850s, and its first cricket match took place in 1854. It holds a special place in the history of the sport as the venue for the first Test match, played between Australia and England in March 1877. In 1971 it also staged the first one-day international, after a Test match was abandoned because of rain, and the Centenary Test was held there in 1977.

The ground

The MCG’s large oval has long boundaries, and the stands that surround it are among the most imposing in the sport. The venue has been redeveloped many times, and it hosted the 1956 Olympic Games. Its scale gives a major cricket match there a unique atmosphere.

Pitch

The MCG pitch has a reputation for being slower and more even than some other Australian grounds. It usually offers some seam movement early in a Test and can become tougher for batters as the match goes on, with some turn for spinners. Drop-in pitches are used, and conditions vary from year to year.

Memorable matches and the Boxing Day Test

The MCG hosts a Test match every year starting on Boxing Day, 26 December, a tradition that draws huge crowds. It has staged three men’s World Cup finals or T20 World Cup finals: the 1992 Cricket World Cup final, in which Pakistan beat England; the 2015 Cricket World Cup final, in which Australia beat New Zealand; and the 2022 T20 World Cup final, in which England beat Pakistan.

Legacy

For many players and fans, the MCG is a defining stadium in the sport. Its mix of history, scale and atmosphere ensures that it remains one of the key venues in world cricket, and a place where many of the game’s most significant moments have taken place.
