Multan Cricket Stadium: History, Pitch and Famous Matches

A guide to Multan Cricket Stadium in Pakistan, the “City of Saints” venue known for Sehwag’s 309, England’s 2024 record score and the Multan Sultans.

Overview

Multan Cricket Stadium is the main cricket ground in Multan, one of the oldest cities in South Asia. It was opened in 2001 and has since hosted Test, one-day and Twenty20 matches. It is the home of the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League, who won the title in 2021.

The city is known for its summer heat, which is a major factor for players who compete here.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch has often been flat and good for batting early in a match, which has given way to turn and variable bounce on later days. Hot, dry weather generally means spinners come into play as the surface deteriorates, although great batting totals have also been recorded here.

Memorable matches

In March 2004 Virender Sehwag scored 309 against Pakistan in a Test at Multan, becoming the first Indian to make a Test triple century and earning the nickname “Sultan of Multan”. India won by an innings and 52 runs.

In October 2024 England made 823 for 7 declared against Pakistan here, with Joe Root scoring 262 and Harry Brook 317, and won by an innings and 47 runs. Pakistan then levelled the series in the second Test at the same venue with spin bowling from Noman Ali and Sajid Khan.

Place in Pakistan cricket

The ground has become a symbol of cricket in southern Punjab, drawing large and enthusiastic crowds. Its status as a Test and PSL venue means it remains an important part of the national cricket calendar.
