Multan Sultans: Pakistan Super League Franchise Profile

Multan Sultans joined the Pakistan Super League as its sixth franchise and quickly grew into one of its most consistent teams. They won the title in 2021 and reached the final in each of the following three seasons.

Origins

The PSL began in 2016 with five teams. In 2017 the Pakistan Cricket Board announced a sixth franchise based in Multan, and the Sultans played their first PSL season in 2018. The team represents the historic city of Multan in southern Punjab, and its green colours and royal theme draw on the city’s long history.

Home ground

The Sultans play at Multan Cricket Stadium, a modern ground opened in the early 2000s that has hosted international matches including Tests. As the PSL moved back to Pakistani venues, Multan became one of the host cities, giving the franchise the opportunity to play before a home crowd.

Results

The side did not progress far in its first seasons, but its fortunes changed in 2021. After the tournament was disrupted and rescheduled, the Sultans finished the competition with a victory over Peshawar Zalmi in the final, taking their first PSL trophy.

They then reached three consecutive finals. In 2022 and 2023 they were beaten by Lahore Qalandars in the title match, and in 2024 they lost the final to Islamabad United. As of 2024 their only championship is the 2021 victory.

Legacy

The Sultans’ rise showed how a newer franchise could challenge established ones, and made Multan a prominent name in the tournament. The team has been known for its strong batting line-ups and for giving opportunities to young Pakistani players alongside overseas stars.
