Peshawar Zalmi: Pakistan Super League Franchise Profile

Peshawar Zalmi are one of the founding Pakistan Super League franchises and represent Peshawar, the main city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The team has reached the PSL final several times and lifted the trophy in 2017.

Origins

The franchise was established in 2015 ahead of the first PSL season in 2016. The name Zalmi means “youth” in Pashto, reflecting the identity of the region it represents. The team plays in yellow and has built a loyal following both in Peshawar and among Pashtun communities around the world.

Home ground

Zalmi’s home venue is the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar, a ground with a long history in Pakistani domestic and international cricket. For years, security concerns meant that PSL games were played elsewhere, so the return of top-level cricket to Peshawar has been important to local supporters.

Finals and the 2017 title

Peshawar finished as a consistently competitive side in the early editions. They won their first PSL title in 2017, defeating Quetta Gladiators in a final staged in Lahore, a match that was notable for being the first PSL final played in Pakistan rather than in the United Arab Emirates.

The team returned to the final in 2018, losing to Islamabad United, and again in 2019, when Quetta Gladiators won the championship. In 2021 Peshawar also reached the final, but lost to Multan Sultans. As of 2024, the 2017 victory remains their only title.

Approach and legacy

Zalmi are known for investing in young talent and for a strong fan culture. The franchise has also run talent-hunt programmes across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, aiming to bring local players into professional cricket.
