Pakistan Super League (PSL): Format, History and Key Facts
Guide to the Pakistan Super League: its 2016 launch, the six franchises, T20 format with playoffs, how the league moved home and the champions so far.
The Pakistan Super League, usually called the PSL, is the country’s premier franchise Twenty20 tournament. Created and run by the Pakistan Cricket Board, it started in 2016 and has grown into one of the best-known leagues in the sport, drawing overseas players and a strong domestic audience.
Origins
The PCB announced plans for a franchise league in the early 2010s, and the first season was staged in February and March 2016 in the United Arab Emirates, because international cricket had been limited in Pakistan after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka team. The first edition had five franchises: Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. Islamabad United won the first title, beating Quetta Gladiators in the final.
Teams
Multan Sultans joined for the 2018 season, bringing the total to six teams. The franchises represent the cities of Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Quetta. Each team has been bought by private owners through bidding, and the squads are filled via a player draft in which players are put into categories and picked by the teams.
Format
The tournament is played in the Twenty20 format. Each team plays the others in a league stage, and the top teams progress to the playoffs, with the final deciding the champion. The competition has been staged in the early part of the year, typically between February and March, and has used multiple venues in the country in recent seasons.
Return to Pakistan
The final of the 2017 edition was played in Lahore, which was an early sign that top-level cricket was coming back. By 2020 the entire tournament was played in Pakistan, in Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi. The 2021 season was interrupted by the pandemic and finished in Abu Dhabi. Since 2022 the league has been fully hosted in Pakistan again.
Champions
Through the 2024 season all six franchises had won the title at least once. Islamabad United have won it several times, Lahore Qalandars won back-to-back titles, and Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans have each lifted the trophy. This spread of winners is often highlighted as a sign of how competitive the league is.
Impact
The PSL has served as a pathway to the national team for many young Pakistan cricketers and has helped to bring the game back to home crowds. Its player draft, which includes platinum, diamond, gold, silver and emerging categories, has become a distinctive feature.
