Guide to the SA20, South Africa's franchise T20 league: launched in 2023, six city-based teams with IPL-linked owners, playoff format and early champions.
The SA20 is South Africa's franchise Twenty20 league. It was launched in January 2023 and is played in the South African summer, typically in January and February. The league was created by Cricket South Africa after earlier domestic T20 competitions struggled to attract investment, and it was built around six franchises owned by groups that also own teams in the Indian Premier League.
Plans for a new league were announced in 2022. The six teams were sold to investors from the IPL franchise world, which brought financial backing and experience in running franchise cricket. The first season started in January 2023 with the six teams based on regions and cities of South Africa. Former South African captain Graeme Smith was appointed as league commissioner. Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the inaugural title and won again in 2024.
The six franchises are MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Durban's Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Their owners are connected to Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and the Sun TV Network respectively, which owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. Each match is a Twenty20 game with twenty overs per side. The six teams play each other home and away in the league stage, a total of thirty matches. The top four teams reach the playoffs, which are made up of Qualifier 1, an Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the Final, the same structure used in the IPL. Matches are played at major South African grounds, including stadiums in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Paarl and Gqeberha.
Teams sign players through an auction, and each squad combines local South African players with overseas stars. Leading South African cricketers and international players from many countries have taken part. The league also gives local players a chance to compete in a high-profile T20 environment and has been a pathway for South African talent into other franchise competitions.
The SA20 has been seen as an important step in the recovery of South African domestic cricket and as part of a global trend toward franchise leagues, with owners from the IPL expanding their brands to new countries. The league was launched in the same month as the ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates, which also has IPL-linked owners, and both are part of the wider growth of franchise cricket outside India.
The SA20 also sits alongside South Africa's other domestic competitions, which include the four-day and one-day provincial tournaments run by Cricket South Africa. Because it is played in January and February, the league has at times had to be fitted around international fixtures, a problem shared by every franchise tournament. Even so, it has quickly become a regular and prominent part of the South African cricket year, with strong attendances at many of its grounds.
