Player SpotlightSteve Smith Admits Sandpapergate Memories Still Linger
Ahead of Australia’s Test series in South Africa, Steve Smith opened up about the lasting effect of the 2018 Cape Town ball-tampering scandal.
Profile of Graeme Smith, the left-handed opener who captained South Africa from the age of 22 and led the team in a record 109 Tests.
Graeme Smith was handed the South African captaincy at the age of 22 and went on to lead the national side for more than a decade. A left-handed opening batter with a distinctive, front-foot-heavy style, he built a reputation for resilience and for performing in the biggest matches.
Born in Johannesburg in 1981, Smith made his Test debut against Australia in Cape Town in 2002. In 2003 he was appointed captain, taking over a side in transition. His early statement came that summer in England, where he scored 277 at Edgbaston and 259 at Lord’s.
Smith captained South Africa in 109 Tests, a world record, winning 53 of them. Under his leadership the team won Test series in England in 2008 and in Australia in 2008–09, a first away series success in Australia for South Africa. In Perth in December 2008 the side chased down 414 in the fourth innings, one of the highest successful chases in Test history.
His resolve was shown again in Sydney in January 2009, when he walked out to bat at number 11 with a broken hand in an attempt to save the Test.
Smith’s technique was not conventional. He stood tall and favoured the leg side, but his determination and concentration allowed him to score heavily against pace and spin alike. By the time he retired in March 2014 he had scored over 9,000 Test runs, with 27 centuries (as of the end of 2024).
Smith also played county cricket for Somerset and IPL cricket, and later served as an administrator in South African cricket. His legacy is as a tough, long-serving captain who helped establish South Africa as the leading Test side of his era.
