Sydney Cricket Ground: History, Pitch and Memorable Matches

A guide to the SCG in Sydney, covering its history since the 1800s, the New Year Test, the Pink Test, pitch character and home teams.

The Sydney Cricket Ground, known as the SCG, is one of Australia’s oldest and most atmospheric cricket venues. Located in Moore Park, close to Sydney’s city centre, it is the home of New South Wales cricket and also hosts rugby and Australian Rules football.

History

Cricket has been played on the site since the late 1840s, and the ground has developed over the following decades. The SCG staged its first Test match in 1882, when Australia played England. Over time its stands have been rebuilt, but the ground has kept a sense of history, with heritage features such as the Members’ Pavilion and the former Ladies’ Stand.

The ground

The SCG has a capacity of around 48,000 after modern redevelopments. Its traditional grass hill has been replaced by modern stands, but the venue retains a strong atmosphere. The ground is the home venue of New South Wales and Big Bash League side Sydney Sixers.

Pitch

The SCG pitch is known for being more favourable to spin than most other Australian Test venues. Early in a match it generally offers some bounce and pace for the quicker bowlers, and batting is usually at its best on the first two days, while turn can arrive on days four and five. A conventional strip rather than a drop-in is used.

The New Year Test and the Pink Test

The SCG traditionally hosts the New Year Test, which starts in early January and closes the Australian home Test summer. Since 2009 the third day of the match has become the Pink Test, held in support of the McGrath Foundation, a breast cancer charity founded by former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath and his late wife Jane. Fans wear pink throughout the day, which makes for a memorable sight.

Legacy

The SCG’s combination of tradition, history and a spin-friendly pitch distinguishes it among Australian grounds. It has been the setting for numerous notable matches and remains a key venue in Australia’s home calendar.
