Big Bash League (BBL): Format, History and Key Facts
Guide to Australia’s Big Bash League: its launch in 2011–12, the eight city-based franchises, the summer T20 season, finals and rules that set it apart.
The Big Bash League, known as the BBL, is Australia’s professional Twenty20 competition. It is run by Cricket Australia, played over the Australian summer, and is known for family-friendly entertainment, big crowds and a quick pace of play. It has been a template for many city-based leagues around the world.
Beginnings
The first season took place in December 2011 and January 2012, after Cricket Australia replaced the earlier state-based KFC Twenty20 Big Bash with a franchise model. The eight teams are city-based, rather than state-based. Sydney Sixers were the first champions, winning the 2011–12 title.
The teams
The eight teams are Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder. Two of the clubs share cities, which reflects the large populations of Melbourne and Sydney. The Perth Scorchers have been one of the most successful teams, winning several titles.
Format and season
The competition runs through the Australian summer, from December into January and sometimes February. Teams play a league phase, after which the top teams move into the finals series, ending in a final. Matches are played at big city grounds such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Gabba, Adelaide Oval and Perth Stadium, along with other venues.
Innovations
The BBL has introduced several rules designed to add interest to matches. The Power Surge, brought in during the 2018–19 season, lets the batting side choose a period of two overs of enhanced fielding restrictions. Other additions included the Bash Boost bonus point, introduced in 2021–22, which awards an extra point to the side that is ahead at the halfway stage of the second innings. The league has also been known for the use of in-game microphones and for innovations in television coverage.
Women’s competition
The Women’s Big Bash League began in 2015–16 and has become one of the leading women’s cricket tournaments in the world, with the same city identities as the men’s competition and strong participation by overseas players.
Importance
The BBL has attracted international stars and has helped to develop Australian players for the national team in the shortest format. It also offers a key platform for emerging bowlers and batters during the Australian summer.
