Bangladesh Premier League (BPL): Format, History and Key Facts

Guide to the Bangladesh Premier League: its 2012 launch, the T20 format, the venues in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet, and its role in Bangladeshi cricket.

The Bangladesh Premier League, or BPL, is the country’s professional Twenty20 franchise tournament. Run by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, it began in 2012 and gives domestic players the opportunity to share dressing rooms with overseas internationals in front of passionate home crowds.

Origins

The BPL was launched in early 2012 as Bangladesh looked to build a domestic competition on the lines of the Indian Premier League. The first season was played in Dhaka and Chattogram, with franchises owned by private companies. The tournament has since been staged on multiple occasions, although its scheduling has shifted from year to year, and it was not played in some seasons because of calendar issues.

Teams

The number of teams and their names have varied across seasons as owners have changed. Franchises have been named after cities and regions of the country, such as Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rangpur, Khulna, Rajshahi and Barishal, and the league has used a mixture of long-standing franchises and new entrants. Teams sign local players and overseas players, with a limit on how many foreign players can appear in the starting eleven.

Format

The BPL is played in the Twenty20 format with twenty overs per side. A league stage is followed by playoffs, and the final decides the champion. Matches are mainly staged at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

Role in the game

The BPL has been important in the development of Bangladeshi cricketers, offering exposure to high-level competition and the chance to learn from experienced overseas players. Many players who later represented Bangladesh in Twenty20 internationals first gained attention in the league. It is also valued by Bangladeshi fans as a festival of cricket during the winter months, when conditions are suitable.

Integrity and challenges

As with other franchise leagues, the BPL has had to deal with issues around governance, scheduling and anti-corruption. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has introduced measures over time to strengthen oversight, and the league has continued to be a key fixture on the domestic calendar.
