Glenn McGrath: Profile of Australia’s Pace Great

A career profile of Glenn McGrath, the Australian fast bowler known for relentless accuracy, three World Cup wins and 563 Test wickets.

Glenn McGrath was the spearhead of one of the strongest bowling attacks the game has seen. Tall, patient and almost mechanical in his accuracy, the right-arm fast-medium bowler from country New South Wales built a reputation on hitting the same spot over after over until batters ran out of answers. He finished his Test career with 563 wickets, a figure that stood among the highest ever recorded by a fast bowler.

From Dubbo to the Australian side

McGrath was born in Dubbo, in the central west of New South Wales, and came to prominence through the state side before earning his place in the national team in the early 1990s. He made his Test debut in 1993 and gradually became a fixture, with his ODI career starting a few years later. His rise coincided with a golden era for Australian cricket, and he was a central part of it for well over a decade.

Playing style

McGrath did not rely on extreme pace. His strengths were a high, upright action, steep bounce from his height, subtle seam movement and a very disciplined line just outside off stump. Batters who tried to attack him often found that the margin for error was tiny. He was also known for his mental approach, setting plans for individual opponents and sticking to them.

Career highlights

His record in Test cricket is remarkable: 124 Tests and 563 wickets at an average of roughly 21.6. One of his most celebrated spells came at Perth in 2004, when he took 8 for 24 against Pakistan. He was also a key figure in several Ashes series, including the 2005 contest in England.

In one-day cricket he played 250 ODIs and took 381 wickets between 1996 and 2007. He was part of three successive World Cup-winning Australian teams, in 1999, 2003 and 2007, and was named Player of the Tournament at the 2007 edition in the Caribbean, where he took 26 wickets. He retired from international cricket after that tournament.

Away from Australia, McGrath played county cricket for Worcestershire and Middlesex and later appeared in the Indian Premier League for Delhi Daredevils.

Beyond the boundary

Together with his late wife Jane, McGrath founded the McGrath Foundation, a charity that funds specialist breast care nurses in communities across Australia. The foundation has become one of the best-known charitable causes in Australian sport, and its annual Pink Test day is now a regular fixture on the summer calendar.

Legacy

McGrath is widely regarded as one of the finest fast bowlers of all time, admired as much for his consistency as for his big moments. His methods, built on accuracy, planning and fitness, continue to be used as a template for young seamers. Career totals above are as of the end of 2024.
