Gordon Greenidge: West Indies Opener Who Made Fast Bowlers Pay

Profile of Gordon Greenidge, the Barbados-born West Indies opening batter, his partnership with Desmond Haynes, his Hampshire career and his Lord’s 214 not out.

Gordon Greenidge was a commanding opening batter for the great West Indies teams of the 1970s and 1980s. Strong off the back foot and fierce through the off side, he formed one of the most successful opening partnerships in Test history alongside Desmond Haynes.

Early life and rise

Greenidge was born in Barbados in 1951 and moved to England as a teenager, where he developed his cricket and qualified through the county system. He joined Hampshire, the county he would serve for many years, and made his Test debut for West Indies in 1974.

His early Tests brought quick success, including a century on debut against India, and he was soon established as a regular at the top of the order.

Playing style

Greenidge combined a compact technique with power. He was an outstanding cutter and hooker and a punishing driver when the ball was pitched up. Against both pace and spin he scored freely, which made him a difficult opponent in all conditions. Alongside Haynes, he gave West Indies a platform that allowed the famous batting line-up and pace attack to dominate games.

Career highlights

His most celebrated innings came at Lord’s in 1984, when West Indies chased a large target on the final day against England. Greenidge finished unbeaten on 214 and led his side to a nine-wicket victory, a performance regularly cited among the finest fourth-innings batting in Test cricket. It formed part of the 1984 series sweep that became known as the Blackwash.

He scored thousands of runs in both Test and one-day cricket and was a member of the West Indies side that won the 1979 World Cup. For Hampshire he scored heavily over a long period and became one of the county’s great overseas players.

His opening stands with Haynes produced a long list of century partnerships in Tests, and for many years they were regarded as the most productive opening pair in the history of the format.

Legacy

Greenidge retired from international cricket in 1991. He is remembered as a model of the modern opener: technically sound, aggressive when needed and mentally tough. His 214 not out at Lord’s remains a benchmark for chasing teams, and he is spoken of with Haynes as the foundation of a golden era for West Indies batting.
