Profile of Grant Flower, the Zimbabwe batting all-rounder who scored 201 not out against Pakistan in 1995, played alongside his brother Andy and later became a coach.
Grant Flower was one of Zimbabwe’s most dependable batters during the national team’s early years in Test cricket. A right-handed batter who also bowled left-arm spin, he spent most of his career alongside his brother Andy, and together they formed one of the most notable sibling partnerships in the game.
Born in Zimbabwe in 1970, Grant Flower made his international debut in 1992, when Zimbabwe played its first Test. He was a regular member of the side for more than a decade, and was part of the team that took on some of the best teams in the world while still developing.
Grant was an organised and patient batter, usually at the top or in the middle of the order. He was strong off the back foot and scored steadily, and his left-arm spin gave Zimbabwe a useful extra option, particularly in one-day cricket where he bowled controlled overs in the middle of the innings.
His most famous innings was an unbeaten 201 against Pakistan at Harare in 1995. Andy scored a century in the same match, making it one of the most notable sibling achievements in Test history, and Zimbabwe won the Test, their first victory in the format.
Over his career he scored more than 3,000 Test runs and more than 6,000 one-day international runs, as of the end of 2024, figures that placed him among his country’s leading batters. He also played for Essex in county cricket, as did his brother.
He retired from international cricket in 2004, around the time that many of Zimbabwe’s best players left the national side amid administrative disputes.
After finishing as a player, Flower moved into coaching and worked with several international teams in batting and head coaching roles, drawing on his long experience of international batting.
