A profile of Harbhajan Singh, the Punjab off-spinner: his rise, the 2001 series against Australia, Test hat-trick, World Cup wins and IPL career.
Harbhajan Singh is a right-arm off-spinner from Jalandhar, Punjab, who became India’s leading spin bowler in the early 2000s. Nicknamed the Turbanator, he combined sharp turn with bounce and a competitive streak.
Born in 1980, Harbhajan rose through domestic cricket with Punjab. He made his Test debut against Australia in Bangalore in March 1998, but had a difficult early career, including a spell out of the side. His revival came in 2001, when he returned to the team for the home series against Australia.
Harbhajan used a high action and bowled with strong overspin, generating bounce and drift. His doosra and arm ball were useful variations, and he was often at his best against left-handers. He was also a capable lower-order batter, with a Test hundred against New Zealand.
In the 2001 series against Australia he took 32 wickets in three Tests, and at Kolkata he became the first Indian to take a Test hat-trick. India won the series 2–1. He finished with 417 Test wickets in 103 matches.
In one-day cricket, he took 269 wickets in 236 matches. He was part of India’s winning squads at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. In the IPL he played for Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. He announced his retirement from all cricket in December 2021.
