Profile of Mumbai Indians, the IPL franchise from India’s financial capital: founding in 2008, Wankhede Stadium, ownership, honours and the club’s legacy.
Mumbai Indians, often shortened to MI, are one of the founding franchises of the Indian Premier League. Representing Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, the team plays in blue and gold and has become one of the most decorated clubs in the competition. Their record, scale and fan base make them a constant reference point in discussions of IPL history.
The club entered the league for its first season in 2008, one of eight city franchises sold by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Mumbai Indians are owned by Reliance Industries through its sports arm, and the group has used the same ownership structure to establish connected teams in other leagues around the world. Over the years the franchise has invested heavily in scouting, academies and coaching, which is often cited as a reason for its sustained strength.
The team plays its home matches at the Wankhede Stadium in south Mumbai, a ground close to the Arabian Sea with a well-known atmosphere and a long record as an international venue. It hosted the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup, in which India defeated Sri Lanka. Wankhede has traditionally been a high-scoring ground for white-ball cricket, with a true bounce and a fast outfield that suit stroke-makers. Mumbai Indians have also played matches at other venues in the city and around Navi Mumbai when scheduling required it.
As of the end of the 2024 season, Mumbai Indians have won the IPL five times: in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. That total is shared with Chennai Super Kings, making them the joint most successful side in tournament history up to that point. The 2019 final, which they won by a single run against Chennai Super Kings, is remembered as one of the closest finishes in the tournament’s history. They also won the Champions League Twenty20 in 2011 and 2013. The club did not win the title in its first five seasons, so its first trophy in 2013 marked a turning point.
The motto Duniya Hila Denge and the tagline of One Family are used by the club to describe its approach to community, and it has built a visible presence in Mumbai through youth programmes and charity work. Supporters are known as the Paltan. Many Indian internationals have developed through the franchise’s pathway, and the team is closely identified with the city’s cricketing culture, from maidan cricket to Ranji Trophy success by Mumbai’s domestic side.
Because of its size and record, Mumbai Indians play a major role in the commercial profile of the IPL. Matches involving the team routinely attract large television audiences, and the franchise’s rivalry with Chennai Super Kings is often described as the biggest fixture in the league.
Their home ground is the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
They had won five, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
The franchise is owned by Reliance Industries through its sports business.
