Player SpotlightMichael Vaughan Believes Harry Brook Can Deliver England a White-Ball Trophy
Michael Vaughan says Harry Brook has the quality to win England a major white-ball title and shine in an Ashes series as captain and batter.
A profile of Harry Brook, the Yorkshire-born England batter known for his record 317 against Pakistan and fast-scoring style in all formats.
Harry Brook is a right-handed batter from Yorkshire who quickly became a key part of England’s middle order. Known for scoring rapidly in every format, he made an immediate impact in Test cricket and has maintained a reputation as one of the most dynamic young batters in the game.
Born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, Brook came through the Yorkshire system and led England at under-19 level before graduating to the senior county side. His strong displays in the T20 Blast and The Hundred, where he played for Northern Superchargers, helped bring him into England’s white-ball squads. He was part of the group that won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Brook has a compact technique with a strong base, combined with the ability to hit sixes in almost any direction. In Tests he is willing to attack from the outset, which suits the aggressive approach England have taken in recent years. He is also a safe fielder and has bowled a few overs of medium pace when required.
His Test career began with a remarkable tour of Pakistan in late 2022, when he scored three centuries in his first four innings of the series in Rawalpindi, Multan and Karachi. In 2024 in Multan he made 317, the highest individual Test score by an England batter, and shared a stand of 454 with Joe Root, who made 262, as England won by an innings.
He has also appeared in franchise leagues, including the Indian Premier League for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals, and in the Pakistan Super League for Lahore Qalandars.
Because Brook’s career is still developing, it is too early to define his final legacy. Even so, his early record and the speed at which he scores have made him a central figure in England’s approach to Test cricket.
