A career profile of Joe Root, the Yorkshire-born England batter who became his country’s highest Test run-scorer and a former Test captain.
Joe Root is the leading Test run-scorer in England’s history and one of the most consistent batters of the modern era. Smooth, adaptable and unflustered, he has scored heavily in all conditions and has been a central figure in the England side for more than a decade.
Born in Sheffield in 1990, Root grew up playing club cricket for Sheffield Collegiate and progressed through the Yorkshire system. He made his Test debut in December 2012 against India in Nagpur, and quickly became a regular in the middle order.
Root’s batting is built on soft hands, excellent balance and an ability to rotate the strike. He is a fine player of spin, helped by a good sweep and reverse sweep, and combines orthodox technique with inventive stroke play. He also bowls part-time off-spin, which has proved useful in some matches.
Root was part of the England side that won the 2019 ODI World Cup, and has been an important figure in several Ashes campaigns. He captained England in Tests from 2017 until April 2022, leading the team in 64 matches, which is a record for England, and winning 27 of them.
He scored heavily in 2021, passing 1,700 Test runs in the calendar year, including double centuries against Sri Lanka at Galle and India at Chennai. In 2022, he played a major role in England’s chase of 277 against New Zealand at Lord’s, scoring an unbeaten 115.
In 2024, Root went past Alastair Cook to become England’s highest Test run-scorer, and went beyond 12,000 Test runs. At Multan in October 2024 he scored 262 against Pakistan, in a huge partnership with Harry Brook, who made 317.
Root’s career is ongoing, so this profile does not give a final total or make claims about his current form. What is clear is that he has produced an outstanding body of work in all formats, and that his position in the list of England’s best batters is assured.
