NewsGlenn Phillips Explains Why He Wore Sunglasses to Face Jofra Archer
Glenn Phillips said glare from the sight screen made Jofra Archer’s pace hard to pick up at The Oval, so he wore sunglasses in New Zealand’s 253-run win.
A profile of Jofra Archer, the Barbados-born fast bowler who bowled England’s 2019 World Cup Super Over, covering his pace, style and career.
Jofra Archer is a right-arm fast bowler who was born in Barbados and has represented England since 2019. Capable of bowling at express pace with an economical, easy-looking action, he made an enormous impact in his first year in international cricket.
Archer grew up in Barbados, where he played age-group cricket for the West Indies at youth level before moving to England and joining Sussex. His performances in the Big Bash League for Hobart Hurricanes and the Indian Premier League for Rajasthan Royals in 2018 brought him to wider attention. He qualified for England and made his one-day international debut in 2019.
Archer relies on pace, accuracy and a smooth run-up that disguises how quickly the ball arrives. He is able to bowl yorkers and short balls with good control, which makes him valuable both with the new ball and in the closing overs of white-ball innings. He is also a capable lower-order batter.
His defining moment came in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s, when he bowled the Super Over that helped England beat New Zealand for their first men’s 50-over title. He took 20 wickets in that tournament. Weeks later he made his Test debut at Lord’s during the 2019 Ashes, where one of his short deliveries struck Steve Smith on the neck, a moment that became one of the series’ best-remembered passages.
Archer has faced several injury problems, notably to his elbow and back, which have interrupted his international career. He has continued to play franchise cricket, including for Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians in the IPL, and for Southern Brave in The Hundred.
Because his career is still in progress, his final place in the game is yet to be settled. Even so, his role in the 2019 final means he has secured a prominent place in English cricket’s recent history.
