Profile of Rajasthan Royals, the IPL franchise from Jaipur: the surprise 2008 champions, home ground, suspension years, finals and talent-first approach.
Rajasthan Royals, known as RR, are one of the eight founding franchises of the Indian Premier League and the winners of its first edition in 2008. Based in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, the team plays in pink, a colour linked to the city’s nickname as the Pink City, and has long had a reputation for finding and developing young players.
When the IPL began in 2008, few observers expected Rajasthan Royals to challenge the more heavily promoted franchises. The side was led by the Australian spin legend Shane Warne, who acted as captain and coach. With a squad built around young Indian players and a handful of overseas stars, the team topped the league table and beat Chennai Super Kings in the final. The result is widely regarded as one of the great underdog stories in franchise sport.
The team’s home is the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, a venue that has hosted international matches and is known for a large capacity and an atmosphere of strong local support. The ground has typically offered a reasonable balance between bat and ball, although conditions can vary through the season.
In 2015 an inquiry connected to a betting and spot-fixing case led to Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings being suspended from the IPL for two seasons. The club missed the 2016 and 2017 editions and returned in 2018. Since then the team has reached the playoffs on several occasions, and in 2022 it made it to the final for the first time since 2008, finishing as runners-up to Gujarat Titans.
The club has an established pipeline for discovering young cricketers through trials, academies and partnerships, and several players who first became known through the franchise went on to represent India. This approach, together with its use of mixed squads of experienced overseas players and domestic youngsters, has remained central to the identity of the team.
The owners have also invested in teams in other leagues, for example in the Caribbean Premier League, where the Barbados franchise is known as Barbados Royals, and in South Africa’s SA20 through Paarl Royals. These investments give the Royals brand a presence in several competitions across the cricket calendar.
