Australia great David Warner will play for Kathmandu Gorkhas in the 2026 Nepal Premier League, which runs from October 26 to November 21.
A profile of Shane Warne, the Australian leg-spinner who revived wrist-spin: the Ball of the Century, 708 Test wickets, World Cup and IPL success.
Shane Warne was an Australian right-arm leg-spinner widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers in the history of the game. Born in 1969 in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, he restored the popularity of wrist-spin and became one of the most recognisable cricketers in the world.
Warne grew up in Melbourne and played for Victoria before making his Test debut against India at Sydney in January 1992. His early Tests were modest, but he quickly became a central figure in the Australian attack.
Warne combined powerful turn with accuracy and a deep repertoire including the flipper, the slider and the googly. He was as much a tactician as a technician, setting up batters over several overs and using psychology as well as skill. His competitive instinct and bowling variations made him hard to play.
His first delivery in Ashes cricket, at Old Trafford in 1993, dismissed Mike Gatting and became known as the Ball of the Century. In the 2005 Ashes in England he took 40 wickets despite Australia losing the series. At the 1999 World Cup he was player of the match in both the semi-final and the final, as Australia took the title.
He retired from Test cricket in January 2007, having taken 708 wickets in 145 Tests, becoming the first bowler to reach 700. He took 293 wickets in 194 one-day internationals. He captained Hampshire from 2000 to 2007. In 2008 he captained and coached Rajasthan Royals to the inaugural Indian Premier League title. He was named one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Century in 2000.
Warne died suddenly in March 2022 at the age of 52 while in Thailand, prompting tributes from around the world. A stand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was renamed in his honour. Statistics are as of the end of 2024.
