NewsKumble Doubts CSK Will Disturb Winning Side to Bring Back Dhoni
Anil Kumble says MS Dhoni is rebuilding fitness and keeping wickets in the nets, yet CSK may still resist changing a combination that has been winning.
A profile of Anil Kumble, the Bengaluru leg-spinner who took 619 Test wickets for India and claimed all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999.
Anil Kumble was born in Bengaluru in 1970 and played for Karnataka. He made his international debut in 1990, and over the next eighteen years he became India’s most successful bowler in Test cricket. His rise was notable because he was a leg-spinner who relied on pace and bounce rather than large turn.
Kumble bowled quicker than most leg-spinners, relying on accuracy, variations of pace and steep bounce to trouble batters, particularly on helpful pitches in India. His persistence and stamina made him hard to score against, and he was also a determined lower-order batter.
He played 132 Tests, taking 619 wickets, and 271 one-day internationals, taking 337 wickets. In February 1999 he took all ten wickets for 74 runs against Pakistan in Delhi, becoming only the second bowler in Test history to take ten wickets in an innings, after England’s Jim Laker.
In 2002 he bowled while wearing a bandage around a fractured jaw in a Test against West Indies in Antigua, a moment still cited as a symbol of his commitment. His only Test century, an unbeaten 110, came at The Oval in 2007.
Kumble captained India in Tests in 2007 and 2008 before retiring in November 2008. He later served as head coach of the national team from 2016 to 2017, and he has held administrative and coaching roles in the Indian Premier League.
Kumble is regarded as one of the great spin bowlers and one of India’s most dedicated cricketers. His career figures, as of the end of 2024, remain the highest for an Indian Test bowler.
