Player SpotlightParthiv Patel Says ‘Sky Is the Limit’ for Sooryavanshi After India Debut
Parthiv Patel praises Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 14 on debut against England, while Deep Dasgupta questions India’s bowling balance after a four-wicket loss.
Profile of Axar Patel, the Gujarat left-arm spinner and left-handed batter who took 27 wickets in his first Test series and won the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Axar Patel is a slow left-arm spinner and left-handed batter who has become one of India’s most valuable all-rounders. Accurate, tight and capable of hitting powerfully down the order, he has found a role in all three formats.
Born in Nadiad, Gujarat in 1994, Axar played domestic cricket for Gujarat. He had a successful early IPL career with Kings XI Punjab, later known as Punjab Kings, and made his One Day International debut in 2014, against Bangladesh.
As a bowler, Axar relies on a tight line and a quicker pace than many orthodox left-arm spinners, which allows him to attack the stumps and restrict scoring in the Powerplay as well as the middle overs. He varies the pace and bounce rather than turning the ball a great deal. As a batter, he is a hard-hitting left-hander at the lower-middle order, often used to give the innings a finish.
Axar made his Test debut in February 2021 against England in Chennai. In his first Test series, in which India won, he took 27 wickets in three matches, an excellent start in the longer format on pitches that suited spin.
He was a member of the Indian squad that won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States, and played a major part with the bat in the final against South Africa, scoring 47 from the middle order.
After playing for Punjab Kings, Axar moved to Delhi Capitals, where he became a key all-round player in the IPL. His improved batting in the later part of his career has made him more than a specialist bowler.
Axar represents a modern kind of all-rounder, one who offers control with the ball and hitting with the bat. His impact in India’s recent success in ICC events, and in Test cricket at home, has made him an important figure in the team.
He made his ODI debut in 2014 against Bangladesh and his Test debut in 2021 against England in Chennai.
He took 27 wickets in three Tests against England in 2021, which India won.
He scored 47 batting in the middle order in the final against South Africa, which India won.
