Edgbaston, Birmingham: History, Pitch and Memorable Matches

Discover Edgbaston, home of Warwickshire: its Test history, the 2005 Ashes thriller, how the pitch plays and the major tournaments held in Birmingham.

Edgbaston in Birmingham is the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club and one of the most atmospheric grounds in English cricket. It has a reputation for lively crowds, and the combination of a compact bowl and tight finishes has produced some of the sport’s best-remembered games.

History

Warwickshire made the ground their home in the late nineteenth century. Edgbaston staged its first Test in 1902, when England met Australia. That match is remembered for Australia being bowled out for 36 in their first innings, with rain eventually denying England the chance of a win.

In county cricket, Brian Lara’s unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994 remains the highest individual score in first-class history.

The 2005 Ashes Test

Edgbaston’s most famous Test came in August 2005. In the second Test of the Ashes series, England beat Australia by two runs after Australia’s last-wicket pair had come close to completing a huge chase. It was one of the narrowest results in Test history and helped define a series that gripped the country.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch usually offers good carry, and seam bowlers can make early use of the conditions, especially if the sky is cloudy. Batters who survive the opening period can score freely on a quick outfield. In the shorter formats, scores of 160 or more are routine, which gives the ground a reputation for entertaining cricket.

Major events

Edgbaston staged matches in the 2019 men’s World Cup, including a semi-final in which England beat Australia. In 2022 it hosted the women’s cricket tournament of the Commonwealth Games, where Australia beat India in the final.

It also regularly hosts Warwickshire’s white-ball games and The Hundred matches for the Birmingham Phoenix.

The ground today

The ground has a capacity of about 25,000, and its stands combine older and newer designs. Its location close to Birmingham city centre makes it easy to reach, and its fans are often described as among the noisiest in England.
