MI Cape Town: SA20 Franchise Profile and History

MI Cape Town is one of the six franchises in SA20, South Africa’s Twenty20 league. The team is owned by the group behind Mumbai Indians and forms part of a growing worldwide network of sister teams under the MI brand.

Origins

SA20 was launched by Cricket South Africa, with all six teams sold to owners connected to Indian Premier League franchises. MI Cape Town was formed in 2022 ahead of the league’s inaugural season in January 2023. The branding mirrors Mumbai Indians’ blue and gold colours, and the same ownership group also runs MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20 and MI New York in Major League Cricket in the United States.

Home ground

The team plays at Newlands in Cape Town, one of the most picturesque and historic cricket grounds in the world, set beneath Table Mountain. Newlands has staged Test cricket since the nineteenth century, and the SA20 uses the venue for its home fixtures. The ground is known for offering something to both seam bowlers and batters, depending on conditions and time of day.

The first SA20 season

The franchise was involved in the opening match of SA20 in January 2023, hosting Paarl Royals at Newlands. That fixture marked the start of the league, which has since become a prominent date on the global franchise calendar.

Like other teams in the league, MI Cape Town builds its squad through an auction and through wildcard picks, drawing on South African players as well as overseas internationals.
