Islamabad United: Pakistan Super League Franchise Profile

Islamabad United are a Pakistan Super League franchise representing the national capital. They were crowned champions of the very first PSL season in 2016 and have since added further titles, making them one of the most successful teams in the competition.

Origins

The franchise was formed in 2015, one of the original teams in the PSL. Islamabad itself does not have a major international cricket ground, so the team has historically used venues in the neighbouring city of Rawalpindi, whose stadium is the closest international-standard ground to the capital.

Home ground

Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium is the venue most associated with the team’s home fixtures. It has hosted Tests and one-day internationals for many years and is known for its pace-friendly conditions and for being a favourite of fast bowlers.

Titles

United won the inaugural PSL in 2016, beating Quetta Gladiators in the final. They won again in 2018, defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final. After a long gap, they claimed a third title in 2024, beating Multan Sultans in the decider. As of 2024 that makes three championships.

The side has often been recognised for strong all-round balance, with a core of experienced overseas stars backed by Pakistani match-winners, and for consistently reaching the knockout stages.

Significance

As the franchise of the capital, United’s fan base spans Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Their early success helped legitimise the new league in its first years, when the PSL was still establishing itself in the global T20 calendar.
