Profile of Joburg Super Kings, the SA20 franchise owned by the Chennai Super Kings group: formation, the Wanderers home ground and brand links.
Joburg Super Kings are the Johannesburg-based team in SA20, South Africa’s franchise Twenty20 league. The club is owned by the group behind Chennai Super Kings and carries the same yellow colours and lion imagery associated with that brand.
When SA20 was created, all six franchises were bought by owners from the Indian Premier League. The Chennai Super Kings group secured the Johannesburg team, which was formed in 2022 and began play in the inaugural season in January 2023. The name echoes the IPL side, and the franchise is part of an effort to build a wider Super Kings network overseas, which also includes a team in Major League Cricket in the United States.
The team plays at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, widely known as the Bullring because of its tall, steep stands and intense atmosphere. The Wanderers is one of South Africa’s main international venues and has hosted a World Cup final, in 2003. Its high altitude and quick outfield have traditionally made it a good ground for stroke-making and big totals, while the pitch has also offered pace and bounce.
The Super Kings use the SA20 auction and wildcard system to assemble their squad, combining South African domestic talent with overseas internationals. The league is played in January and February, in a window when many global players are available.
Johannesburg is South Africa’s biggest city, and the franchise draws on a large urban fan base in Gauteng province. Its association with an established IPL brand also gives it a global profile from its earliest days.
The franchise aims to engage local supporters through community cricket initiatives and a youth-focused approach, in line with the league’s wider goal of growing the sport across South Africa.
