Pretoria Capitals: SA20 Franchise Profile and History

Pretoria Capitals represent South Africa’s administrative capital in SA20, the country’s franchise Twenty20 league. The team is owned by the group behind the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League and reached the final of the first SA20 season in 2023.

Origins

The franchise was created in 2022 when SA20 was set up, with each of the six teams bought by an IPL-linked owner. The Capitals’ owners are the same ownership partnership that runs the Delhi Capitals.

Home ground

The team’s home venue is SuperSport Park in Centurion, which sits between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The ground has hosted Tests, one-day internationals and T20 internationals, and is regarded as a venue with good pace and bounce, making it a place where fast bowlers can thrive. It is also known for the Boxing Day Test tradition that South Africa has often held there.

The 2023 final

In the opening SA20 season, the Capitals reached the final, where they were beaten by Sunrisers Eastern Cape. That remains their best result in the competition as of 2024, and the team has yet to win the title.

Role in the league

Like other SA20 franchises, the Capitals build their squads through an auction and a system of wildcard picks, blending South African players with overseas internationals. The team has a following in Gauteng province and benefits from sharing a brand with one of the IPL’s better-known sides.
