Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL): Format, History and Key Facts

Guide to the Tamil Nadu Premier League, the state T20 competition run by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association: started in 2016, with town-based franchises.

The Tamil Nadu Premier League, or TNPL, is a state-level Twenty20 franchise competition in southern India. It is organised by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and was first held in 2016. Like other state leagues in India, it is based on the model of the Indian Premier League but features teams from within a single state, giving local players a professional stage.

How it began

The league was launched in 2016 by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association as a way of developing talent from towns and districts across the state and of increasing interest in cricket outside Chennai. Franchise teams were set up around cities and towns of Tamil Nadu, with private owners and sponsors, and the league became one of the first state leagues in India to be modelled closely on the IPL. It has since been held regularly in the Indian monsoon season, often in July and August.

Teams

The teams have been named after places in Tamil Nadu, including Chepauk, Dindigul, Coimbatore (Kovai), Madurai, Tirunelveli (Nellai), Salem, Tiruppur and Tiruchirappalli (Trichy). Team names have often included the name of a sponsor and have changed from one season to the next, and the group of franchises has been reorganised as the league has grown. Players are drawn mainly from clubs and academies in the state, and many are selected through a draft or auction.

Format and venues

Matches are Twenty20 games with twenty overs per side. The teams play each other in a league stage, and the top teams qualify for a playoff stage that ends in a final. Games have been played at venues in Tamil Nadu, including the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk in Chennai, and at grounds in other cities such as Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Salem and Coimbatore. The league has helped bring professional match-day conditions and broadcasts to some of these grounds.

Importance

The TNPL has been a pathway for local players to attract attention from IPL franchises and the state team. Bowlers T. Natarajan and Varun Chakaravarthy are among well-known cricketers who have played in the competition. For many young players it provides competitive cricket against top domestic players in front of crowds and television cameras, and it has been followed by similar leagues in other Indian states.

The competition has also become a source of revenue for the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and a chance for local sponsors and businesses to be involved with the sport. The success of the league has encouraged other state associations in India to start their own franchise tournaments, which together have widened the opportunities for domestic cricketers well beyond the national team and the IPL.
