Guide to the Lanka Premier League: its 2020 launch, five franchises, T20 format and venues, how the competition is run and its role in Sri Lankan cricket.
The Lanka Premier League, or LPL, is the professional Twenty20 franchise tournament of Sri Lanka. Run by Sri Lanka Cricket, it was launched in 2020 as part of an effort to give local players a stronger domestic platform and to bring international players to the island.
The tournament was announced in 2020 and was originally scheduled for August, but the coronavirus pandemic caused it to be postponed. The inaugural edition was then staged in November and December 2020, with matches played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota. The league was designed to follow the model of competitions such as the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League, with teams drawn from different parts of the country.
The LPL has been played by five teams, which have been bought by private owners. Franchises have represented Colombo, Dambulla, Galle, Jaffna and Kandy, and team names have changed from season to season as ownership and branding have evolved. Jaffna’s team won the first edition.
The league is played in the Twenty20 format, with teams meeting each other in a league stage, followed by playoffs and a final. Overseas players are signed through a draft and auction process, and the squads combine established Sri Lankan internationals, emerging domestic players and visiting stars. Matches are staged at venues across the island, including Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy and the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
The LPL is regarded as a key step in the development of Sri Lanka’s younger players, who gain experience alongside leading overseas cricketers. It also aims to improve the financial position of cricketers in the country and to attract wider interest in the game. The competition has supported the careers of several players who have gone on to represent the national side in Twenty20 internationals.
Like other leagues, the LPL has had to manage scheduling issues, as it competes for players with other franchise tournaments held at similar times of the year. It has also faced a variety of off-field issues in some seasons, which Sri Lanka Cricket has said it works to address with integrity measures.
The first edition was held in November and December 2020.
Five franchises take part.
