Eden Gardens: History, Pitch and Famous Matches in Kolkata
Explore Eden Gardens in Kolkata: its history since 1864, pitch behaviour, the 2001 Laxman-Dravid Test, World Cup finals and its famously loud crowds.
Eden Gardens is one of the oldest and most celebrated stadiums in cricket. Located in Kolkata and managed by the Cricket Association of Bengal, it has been a cricket venue since 1864 and is known for the noise and passion of its crowds. It is the home ground of Bengal in domestic cricket and of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
History
The ground takes its name from the Eden Gardens park in which it sits. Over the twentieth century it grew into a vast bowl that could hold well over 100,000 spectators, which made it among the biggest cricket grounds anywhere. Safety and comfort upgrades have since reduced the capacity to roughly 66,000, but it still ranks among the largest venues in India.
Pitch and conditions
Eden Gardens has traditionally offered something for the quicker bowlers early in a game, with the ball swinging in the morning and cooler months bringing some movement. As matches progress the surface typically slows and spin comes into play. In limited-overs cricket, dew in the evening can make the ball harder to grip for bowlers defending a total.
Memorable moments
The 1987 World Cup final was played here, when Australia beat England by seven runs. The 1996 World Cup semi-final between India and Sri Lanka ended in disorder after crowd trouble, and Sri Lanka were awarded the match. In March 2001 the ground hosted one of the great Test comebacks: after following on against Australia, India were lifted by VVS Laxman’s 281 and Rahul Dravid’s 180 and went on to win by 171 runs. In 2016 the venue staged the T20 World Cup final, in which West Indies beat England after Carlos Brathwaite hit four sixes in the final over. In 2019 it also staged India’s first day-night Test, against Bangladesh, with a pink ball.
Atmosphere
Players from many countries have spoken of the unique atmosphere at Eden Gardens, where a full house can be extremely loud. That sense of occasion, together with a long list of landmark fixtures, explains why the ground remains one of the sport’s most recognisable names.
