Eden Park: History and Famous Matches at Auckland’s Ground
A guide to Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest stadium: short boundaries, the 1992 and 2015 World Cup semi-finals and its role in cricket.
Eden Park is New Zealand’s largest stadium and its best-known sporting venue. Located in the Auckland suburb of Kingsland, it is primarily a rugby ground, but it is also a leading international cricket venue and the home ground of Auckland Aces in domestic cricket. The stadium has been in use since 1900.
A multi-sport venue
Eden Park has hosted rugby World Cup finals as well as major cricket. For cricket, it is notable for its unusual shape. The boundaries are very short straight down the ground, because the rugby pitch runs in the same direction, while the square boundaries on either side are longer. That gives batters an obvious target for lofted drives and puts a premium on length for bowlers.
Pitch and conditions
Pitches at Eden Park have often suited seam bowlers, with some bounce and lateral movement when the ball is new, especially under cloud. The ground is exposed to Auckland’s changeable weather and wind, and rain can interrupt matches. In white-ball games, the short boundaries have produced some very high scores, as well as exciting chases.
World Cup moments
The ground staged a semi-final of the 1992 World Cup, in which Pakistan beat New Zealand on their way to the title. In February 2015 it hosted the pool match in which New Zealand beat Australia by one wicket after a rapid 50 from Brendon McCullum. Later in the same tournament, on 24 March 2015, New Zealand reached their first World Cup final by beating South Africa in a semi-final at Eden Park, with Grant Elliott hitting the winning six off Dale Steyn.
Test and limited-overs cricket
The ground has also hosted Tests and numerous international white-ball matches, including T20 internationals in which the short straight boundaries have made it a popular venue for big hitters. It remains a central part of New Zealand’s cricket calendar alongside the other major grounds in Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton.
