Profile of Gautam Gambhir, the left-handed Delhi opener who played match-winning innings in the 2007 and 2011 World Cup finals and led Kolkata to IPL titles.
Gautam Gambhir was a left-handed opening batter known for his fierce competitiveness and his ability to produce big innings in finals. He played key roles in two of India’s World Cup triumphs and became one of the most successful captains in Indian Premier League history.
Born in New Delhi in 1981, Gambhir came through the Delhi domestic system, scoring heavily at age-group and first-class level. He made his international debut in 2003 and took time to establish himself, eventually becoming a regular at the top of India’s order in the late 2000s.
A left-handed opener, Gambhir was a determined, hard-working batter. He played strongly through the off side, was quick between the wickets, and had a reputation for staying calm in pressure situations. His innings often steadied the side after early wickets and set up wins for his team.
He played 58 Tests, 147 One Day Internationals and 37 T20 Internationals for India. He scored 75 in the final of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, helping India to the title against Pakistan, and 97 in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, a vital contribution to India’s chase and second world title in the 50-over game.
Gambhir was also a mainstay of the India side that rose to number one in the Test rankings around 2009, during which he played a notable part in series successes overseas, including a long defensive innings in New Zealand.
In the IPL he captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2012 and again in 2014, and played for Delhi Daredevils before that. He retired from all cricket in December 2018. After playing he moved into broadcasting and then politics, serving as a Member of Parliament from 2019 to 2024, and has taken on coaching and mentoring roles in the IPL.
Gambhir is remembered above all as a big-match player. His innings in the two finals, together with his leadership at Kolkata, ensure him a lasting place in the story of Indian white-ball cricket.
He made 97 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, an innings that was central to India’s successful chase.
He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2012 and 2014.
He played 58 Tests, alongside 147 ODIs and 37 T20 Internationals, as of the end of 2024.
