Team NewsSourav Ganguly Takes Over as Delhi Capitals Head Coach for IPL 2027
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani as Delhi Capitals head coach after a sixth-place finish in IPL 2026.
A profile of Sourav Ganguly, the left-handed Kolkata batter who captained India from 2000 to 2005 and later served as president of the BCCI.
Sourav Ganguly was born in Kolkata in 1972, then known as Calcutta, and rose through Bengal’s domestic cricket. He played a one-day international for India in 1992, but it was his Test debut at Lord’s in 1996 that made his name: he scored a century in the first innings, one of the most memorable debuts by an Indian batter.
A graceful left-hander, Ganguly was best known for his driving through the off side, especially against spin, where he often used his feet to hit over the top. He was an aggressive one-day opener and a useful medium-pace bowler, and he brought a combative attitude to the dressing room.
India’s fortunes were at a low point in 2000 when Ganguly took over as captain amid a match-fixing scandal. Over the next five years he built a more confident, competitive side that won series overseas and reached the final of the 2003 World Cup, which India lost to Australia. In 2002 he led India to a famous NatWest Series final win at Lord’s, celebrating by waving his shirt from the balcony.
In all, he played 113 Tests for 7,212 runs and 311 one-day internationals for 11,363 runs. In the IPL he played for Kolkata Knight Riders, the team of his home city.
After retiring from international cricket in 2008, Ganguly moved into administration, becoming president of the Cricket Association of Bengal and then president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 2019 to 2022.
Many consider him the captain who gave modern Indian cricket its self-belief. His influence on younger players who later led India remains a major part of his legacy. The figures above are career totals as of the end of 2024.
