NewsFleming Respects Stokes’ Test Retirement and Rules Out Pushing for Ashes Return
England Test coach Stephen Fleming says Ben Stokes seems at peace with retiring from Tests and that he will not try to talk him out of the decision.
Profile of Stephen Fleming, the left-handed New Zealand batter who captained his country for nearly a decade and won the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy.
Stephen Fleming was born in Christchurch in 1973. He made his Test debut in 1994 and quickly impressed with his languid style at the crease. Remarkably, he was appointed New Zealand captain in 1997, at the age of 23, and held the position for around a decade.
Fleming was a tall, elegant left-handed batter, strong through the off side and with a calm, unhurried technique. As a close fielder, particularly in the slips, he took many catches, and his reading of the game made him a respected tactician.
Fleming played 111 Tests and scored 7,172 runs, and appeared in 280 one-day internationals, scoring 8,037 runs, as of the end of 2024. He captained New Zealand in 80 Tests, a national record. His highest Test score was an unbeaten 274 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2003.
Under his leadership, New Zealand won the ICC KnockOut Trophy in 2000, beating India in the final in Nairobi, which remains one of the country’s major global titles. He guided the team through a period in which resources were limited, regularly getting results against larger nations.
He also played county cricket for Middlesex, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, and was part of the Chennai Super Kings in the early years of the Indian Premier League.
After retiring from international cricket in 2008, Fleming moved into coaching and franchise roles. He is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s best captains, and his approach, which emphasised calm decision-making, planning and loyalty to team culture, influenced many later coaches and captains.
