Sir Richard Hadlee: New Zealand’s Greatest Fast Bowler

Profile of Sir Richard Hadlee, the New Zealand all-rounder who became the first bowler to reach 400 Test wickets and finished with 431.

Sir Richard Hadlee is regarded as the greatest cricketer New Zealand has produced. A fast bowler of precision and intelligence, and a capable left-handed lower-order batter, he carried the national side through the 1980s and became the first bowler in history to take 400 Test wickets.

Early life and rise

Born in Christchurch in 1951, Hadlee came from a cricketing family: his father, Walter, captained New Zealand, and his brothers Dayle and Barry also played for the country. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in Wellington in 1973 and played his final Test against England in 1990.

Playing style

Early in his career Hadlee relied on pace, but later he shortened his run-up and developed into a more controlled bowler who combined seam and swing with accuracy. He planned dismissals carefully, using his intelligence to out-think batters, and he was a combative lower-order batter who scored important runs.

Career highlights

Hadlee finished his Test career with 431 wickets in 86 Tests, together with over 3,000 runs. His best Test figures of 9 for 52 came against Australia in Brisbane in 1985, in a series that New Zealand won in Australia for the first time. In county cricket he played for Nottinghamshire, helping the club win the County Championship in 1981 and 1987, and in 1984 he completed the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in a season.

He also played for Canterbury at home and for Tasmania in Australian domestic cricket.

Legacy

Hadlee was knighted in 1990 for his services to cricket. His career set a benchmark for New Zealand sport, and many of the country’s later fast bowlers have been compared to him. He is remembered as a combination of skill, competitiveness and quiet determination.
