VVS Laxman, India’s Asian Games head coach, says Shreyas Iyer is a players’ captain with the preparation and tactical nous to thrive in T20s.
Profile of Shreyas Iyer, the Mumbai middle-order batter who scored a hundred on Test debut, starred at the 2023 World Cup and captained in the IPL.
Shreyas Iyer is a right-handed middle-order batter from Mumbai who has built a reputation for his strength against spin, his comfort against pace on the front foot and his leadership in franchise cricket.
Born in Mumbai in 1994, Iyer came through the city’s domestic circuit, which has produced many Indian batters. He scored heavily for Mumbai in first-class and limited-overs cricket, and also represented India at youth level, before getting his chance in the Indian Premier League with Delhi, then known as Delhi Daredevils.
Iyer is a stylish, front-foot batter who is especially fluent against spin and against bowling in the middle overs. He is known for clean hitting, including aggressive use of his feet to the slower bowlers, and for being able to accelerate when needed. His handling of short-pitched bowling has been regularly discussed, and has been a focus of attention for opponents.
He made his T20 International debut in November 2017 against New Zealand. He later made a debut in Test cricket in Kanpur in 2021, again against New Zealand, and scored a hundred in his first innings, followed by a half-century in the second.
At the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, Iyer was one of the leading run-scorers for the home side, and he made hundreds against the Netherlands and against New Zealand in the semi-final in Mumbai.
In the IPL, Iyer captained Delhi Capitals to their first final in 2020. He later moved to Kolkata Knight Riders and led them to the title in the 2024 season.
Iyer’s career has been affected by injuries and by competition for places, but his performances in ICC events and his leadership record in the IPL show a player who has made an impact on India’s white-ball cricket.
