Ajit Agarkar is reportedly set to be given an extension as India’s chief selector until June 2027. He took charge in July 2023, and the period since has been one of considerable success for Indian cricket.
A record of trophies
India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final under his watch, then won back-to-back ICC T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Why the BCCI wants continuity
The board is said to value his bold selection calls and steady approach to building teams. With the 2027 World Cup approaching, officials feel stability in the committee matters, particularly because members such as RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha are still new to their roles. A BCCI official described the tenure as bringing smooth transition and fearless decision-making, and talks on the extension are expected to continue during IPL meetings.
Challenges along the way
His term has not been without difficulty. India lost Test series to New Zealand in 2024 and South Africa in 2025, raising concerns about the batting against spin at home. The period also covered major transitions, including the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, and the appointment of Shubman Gill as Test captain, who led India to a 2-2 draw in England.
In white-ball cricket, Agarkar helped install Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain and backed Ishan Kishan’s return for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The decision paid off, with Kishan impressing at the tournament after a strong domestic comeback.
