Ravichandran Ashwin was born in Chennai in 1986 and played for Tamil Nadu. He began as an opening batter in age-group cricket before switching to off-spin. He made his international debut in limited-overs cricket in 2010 and his Test debut against West Indies in Delhi in November 2011.
Ashwin was known for the variety of his off-spin, which included a carrom ball and subtle changes of flight, pace and angle. He thought deeply about the game and constantly refined his methods, which made him a feared bowler on turning pitches, and he was also an effective lower-order batter with six Test hundreds.
In 106 Tests he took 537 wickets, which made him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format after Anil Kumble. He reached the milestone of 500 Test wickets in Rajkot in February 2024. He was part of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad and played a key part in India’s long run of home Test series wins.
In the Indian Premier League he was a long-time member of Chennai Super Kings and also played for several other franchises.
Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket in December 2024, in the middle of the Test series in Australia. He leaves behind a record as one of the most successful spin bowlers in the history of the game, and an influence on how modern spinners think about variation and strategy.
