A profile of Ravindra Jadeja, the Saurashtra left-arm spinner and left-handed batter who became one of India’s most valuable all-rounders across formats.
Ravindra Jadeja was born in Navagam Ghed in Gujarat in 1988 and rose through domestic cricket with Saurashtra. He was part of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning squad in 2008, and he played for Rajasthan Royals in the first IPL season that year. He made his one-day international debut against Sri Lanka in February 2009.
Jadeja bowls accurate, quick slow left-arm spin that gives batters little room to attack, and he is known for being economical. As a batter he plays handily in the lower order, and he has a record of scoring big hundreds in first-class cricket. He is also regarded as one of the best fielders in the world, with a strong, accurate throw.
He made his Test debut against England in Nagpur in December 2012. He was named player of the tournament at the 2013 Champions Trophy, which India won, and he has since been a regular in India’s Test side, especially on home pitches. In 2022 he made an unbeaten 175 against Sri Lanka in Mohali, his highest Test score. He has also been ranked at the top of the ICC Test all-rounder rankings.
In the IPL he is closely associated with Chennai Super Kings, winning several titles with the franchise. He was part of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad and retired from T20 internationals after that tournament.
