A profile of Rishabh Pant, India’s left-handed wicketkeeper-batter: his rise from Roorkee, attacking style, Test highlights abroad and his comeback.
Rishabh Pant is a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter whose fearless approach has made him one of the most distinctive players in modern Indian cricket. Born in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, in 1997, he combines aggressive stroke-play with an instinct for turning matches in short bursts.
Pant moved from Roorkee to Delhi as a teenager to pursue his cricket and went on to play for Delhi in domestic cricket. He featured in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup and soon caught attention in the Indian Premier League with Delhi Capitals, then known as Delhi Daredevils. He made his India debut in 2017 in the T20 format and was soon brought into the Test side.
Pant attacks bowlers of every type, using a wide range of shots including the reverse sweep, the switch hit and powerful drives. He is also known for his improvisation against spin. Behind the stumps he has worked hard to improve, and his glovework has become steadier over time, although his batting remains the headline feature.
His Test debut came at Trent Bridge in 2018 against England, where he hit a six off the first ball he faced in Tests. He later scored a century at The Oval in the same series. In January 2019 at Sydney he made an unbeaten 159, becoming the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a Test hundred in Australia.
At the Gabba in January 2021 he played an unbeaten innings of 89 to guide India to a historic series win in Australia. In 2022 he scored the quickest Test fifty by an Indian, off 28 balls against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.
In December 2022 he was seriously injured in a car accident, which kept him out of cricket for a long period. He returned to competitive action in the 2024 IPL and was part of India’s squad that won the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Pant’s career is marked by bold performances overseas and a determination to recover from serious injury. He has changed expectations for Indian wicketkeepers, showing that the role can be both match-winning with the bat and effective behind the stumps.
