Ricky Ponting says he told Michael Hussey he would never speak to him again if he joined England’s staff under Test head coach Stephen Fleming.
A profile of Ricky Ponting, Australia’s former captain: his Tasmanian roots, aggressive batting, World Cup wins in 1999, 2003 and 2007, and legacy.
Ricky Ponting is a former Australian right-handed batter and captain who dominated international cricket during Australia’s successful era from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. Born in 1974 in Launceston, Tasmania, he became known for his fearless batting and competitive spirit.
Ponting was a talented teenager who played for Tasmania and made his one-day international debut in February 1995. He made his Test debut in December 1995 against Sri Lanka in Perth. After a slow start in Tests, he established himself in the Australian middle order and became a permanent fixture.
Ponting was best known for his pull and hook shots, which he played with great confidence against fast bowling. He was a strong front-foot player and also one of the best fielders of his time, particularly in the covers and at point. His aggressive intent made him a difficult batter to bowl at.
He was part of Australia’s World Cup winning side in 1999 and then captained the team to the title in 2003 and 2007. In the 2003 final in Johannesburg he scored an unbeaten 140 against India. He captained Australia in Tests and one-day cricket, though the team also lost the Ashes in 2005 and 2010–11 while he was in charge.
He retired from international cricket in December 2012 after the Perth Test against South Africa. In Test cricket he played 168 matches and scored 13,378 runs with 41 centuries. In one-day internationals he played 375 matches and scored 13,704 runs with 30 centuries. He also played for Somerset, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.
Ponting is regarded as one of Australia’s most successful captains and among the best batters of his generation. His record at the highest level places him alongside the leading run-scorers in the history of the game. Statistics are as of the end of 2024.
