Chopra Lauds Ashwin for Praising Agarkar as Chief Selector’s Exit Looms

Aakash Chopra has praised R Ashwin for speaking well of Ajit Agarkar, even though Ashwin was among the senior players phased out during Agarkar’s time as chief selector. Agarkar’s term ends on October 4, 2026, and he has reportedly told the BCCI he does not want an extension.

Ashwin’s remarks

Ashwin said Agarkar had to take many big decisions, including phasing out senior players, which cannot have been easy. Stepping back from his own situation, he called Agarkar a very good chairman of selectors.

Chopra said it takes courage to say that. He noted that many big players stay bitter for 10 to 15 years after being left out, and called Ashwin’s stance a sign of character and maturity.

The pressures of the job

Chopra pointed to the criticism both Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have faced. A chief selector, he said, is contractually bound and cannot publicly explain every reason behind selection and transition choices. Since Ashwin was part of that transition and still rates Agarkar’s work, Chopra said he would take his view at face value.

He also referred to Ashwin’s retirement from Test cricket in December 2024, suggesting the spinner understands how hard a transition is for those shaping the next generation.

Agarkar’s tenure

Agarkar became chief selector in July 2023. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy during his tenure, which also saw a major changeover involving several senior players. Ashwin’s comments add another view to the discussion of that period.
