VVS Laxman, who was India’s head coach at the 2026 Asian Games, has backed Shreyas Iyer to do well as captain after India retained the men’s cricket gold medal. Iyer led the side to a 19-run win over Pakistan in the final.
A players’ captain
Laxman told the BCCI that Iyer is only at the start of his captaincy career but has many of the qualities needed in T20 cricket. He described the 31-year-old as someone who makes teammates comfortable and leads by example.
Preparation and tactics
Laxman highlighted Iyer’s thorough preparation. According to the coach, Iyer goes through the plans and the opposition’s strengths and weaknesses before team meetings, and places great importance on fitness.
He also praised Iyer’s tactical sharpness and his understanding of what each player in the squad does best. Laxman felt these skills are especially useful in T20 cricket, where captains must stay ahead of the opposition and make quick decisions.
Overcoming conditions
India’s Asian Games campaign brought difficulties, including tough weather, travel and limited outdoor practice. Laxman said the team showed determination and adaptability. India beat Sri Lanka in the semi-final and then Pakistan in the final to win back-to-back golds.
He noted that the experiences in China in 2023 and Japan in 2026 both tested the side’s ability to adapt, and the players handled them well. For Laxman, the medal also carried special meaning because cricketers so seldom get to stand on a podium for their country.
